The old Noryangjin Fish Market in Seoul is closing/moving soon

Photos from my April 2015 trip to the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market, an iconic seafood market in Seoul which is in the process of relocating to a new building just across the street. Many vendors still refuse to move for various reasons though, despite being issued an ultimatum in March 2016.

I’ve not been to the new place yet, so I can’t comment on the pros and cons, and whether the traditional environment and ambience of the old place could be maintained. The old market was worth a visit, as there’s not many fishery market of this scale in the world; gastronomical wise it was just alright though.

Many locals buy seafood from the market and cook at home, thus the price is quite cheap. Tourists usually choose the seafood from various stalls and then proceed to the restaurants on other floors to process it. There are touters around to “help” you with your choices, you can choose to follow them or not.

For first time visitors the “must try” are long leg crabs and saengseon hoe (raw fish, flounder is popular), and you may want to try the infamous raw octopus too. Restaurants could charge 30-60% of the cost of your ingredients depending on how it’s cook, so in total a Noryangjin dining experience is not necessary cheap.

I entertained a couple of friends from Singapore for this meal. None of us are raw fish fan so we skipped that and had king crab, sea pineapples (which is mainly found in Korea), sea urchins and prawns etc. It’s been a while so I can’t remember the price, estimated around 30000KRW per person I think.
